Anyone who speaks two languages here?

Question

Hey ladies. I am wanting to learn how to write and speak Spanish, due to my major in school it would really give me a upper hand in finding a better job once I graduate. Has anyone learned a completely new language from scratch? I have Spanish classes, but those basically teach the basic words (hello, goodbye, numbers, etc etc) 
How did you guys go about learning a new language? Thanks!

O speak Portuguese, Spanish, English and a bit of French. Latin languages are quite similar to one another. Buying a practice book is the best way to learn imo.

The best way to learn is immersion learning. Start watching telenovelas, many are on netflix. That will help you get used to hearing Spanish. As well as reading. If you have the opportunity to go on an exchange for a semester or year that will really help you as well as join a club. Most community colleges offer conversational Spanish and it’s really cheap. They normally send some sort of booklet to your mail where they offer classes like flower arrangement, painting, computers for noobs etc. They usually offer Spanish and a few other languages.

I found that classes were a great foundation. I took Spanish every year in high school. But what really did it was being around native speakers. I worked at a Mexican restaurant for 3 years and my husbands first language is Spanish. What you learn in classes and how people actually speak is different but i feel that i picked up faster because I had some background. Listening to music in Spanish helps too.

I grew up speaking 3 languages ( English, hindi and a regional native language)  and eventually picked up my 4th language ( Sanskrit)  in school. Currently I am learning my 5th language( French) and I am 20.
 I personally believe that in order to learn any language, you should try to speak it as much as you can even if it's wrong and reading texts in that language and use a dictionary to understand it. 
That's a very fast way to learn it. 
You should watch shows movies with subtitles in the language that you're trying to learn. 
Listen to your favourite songs in the language that you're learning.

I understood English for a couple of years but I didn't wanted to talk in English, I watched the same movie over over with subtitles and then I just listened... Like an audio book, I also listened to a lot of music, mostly simple plan and some Green Day, finally I decided to take a class, five days at week for six months, this class gave the confidence that I needed, I'm not 100% bilingual more like 80% but I can translate and I also know. Also kids books in English were a big help for me.

once you get into higher level Spanish classes you will be writing short essays and reading and conversing with classmates. I went up to Spanish 3 out of 4 in high school.
