Do you think news outlets that spread fake news should be fined?

I’m totally fed up to have to doble and triple check everything I hear on the news. 
I consider that if I’m watching the news or reading a reputable newspaper I will be fed with correct information, but -mainly on TV- that’s not always the case.
Should this have any consequence?

Let's consider a side scenario here-
Let's say someone decides to actually do their job as a journalist.  Say they investigate and find something terrible Trump or anyone really has done.  Now, they report their findings. Unfortunately their findings haven't been completely proven. The accused spends millions of dollars distracting and twisting the situation.. and ultimately the courts decide they cannot prove whether this actually happened or not.
With no rock hard proof of guilt the accused is off the hook.
Now  the journalist and his publication are fined. The journalist loses their job. Nothing happens to the accused.
Do you really think anyone would go out of their way to uncover the truth for us id that's how we repay them?  By giving the government a stick to beat them with?

Not unless it's pure and obvious libel... like slandering someones name without the facts.. but reporting on things that others dont stree with isn't fake news..

I don't really consider it limiting free press if you're holding them up to a standard to fact check and verify everything they're claiming. Every person should be fact checking and not solely relying on what they're told is the truth, but news outlets should be held to a certain standard seeing as how they have the ability to reach many people and sway their opinions. We have a lot of people on here spreading that misinformation and using discredited news sources. That's not okay especially when it comes to hot button issues.

You mean you want to be able to blindly follow ONE tv program and not have to think for yourself? No. This isn’t how the world works, sorry you can’t just turn on the tv and have information shot into your face and now you’re intelligent and correct. Reputable news programs are already upheld to these truth standards. They can’t tell lies. But there are loop holes when things come to personal opinions. Sorry, you’ll have to keep doing some research on your own. Hope you can handle it

No. What all-knowing body determined what's "fake"? Also there are plenty of international run sites/publications over whom we have no jurisdiction who would swoop in and fill the void. And people WILL seek out those news that confirms what they already believe. This is a dangerous slope. And the bigger the government the smaller the citizen. Instead, why don't we do a better job teaching folks the importance of doing their research, of verifying their sources, etc. The public can't be hand fed, nor is it good for us to be. There is such a chance for abuse of power with this idea. If the overseeing body becomes corrupt, and influences what's put out, the public is even more likely to assume everything is true because it's the "law" and they'd be fined otherwise. Freedom of the press means freedom of the press. For good reason.

if you talked to half the idiots in my state our local news station only plays "fake news" but it's only fake news because they don't agree with it even though if you fact check it it's correct.

No, I don’t belong eve in giving the government the ability to financially penalize (or penalize in any way) the press if a story can not be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. That still sounds like it infringes on the 1st Amendment.
I do wish news outlets would stop sensationalizing their headlines...I’ve often found the headlines themselves a bit misleading and I know there’s a great number of people who just skim through and don’t bother reading.
But, I accept it as “the way it is”. We need to support the outlets we find trustworthy and avoid supporting the ones we don’t.
