I just got back from a week in Iceland, a vacation I planned with my daughter before I met my boyfriend. We’ve been together 9 months and it was one of those “when you know it, you know it” Kind of thing. We are 33 and 34, he was married before and I was in a terrible 8 year relationship. We just understand each other so well, we love each other with everything we have and push each other to be better versions of ourselves every day. It’s honestly one of the healthiest relationships I’ve ever seen, let alone been in. I’ve never wanted to get married and absolutely never wanted any more children, but that has all changed over the course of the relationship.

We’ve talked deeply about it, we know we want to marry each other and have a family together. But we also know we are not in a place to be doing that right now, and that there’s absolutely no rush. While in Iceland I stopped into a silversmith shop to check out some of the trinkets and I saw some awesome rings. I’m allergic to base metals so the only jewelry I can wear without a nasty reaction is real gold, sterling silver, or stainless steel. The rings are stainless steel and sterling silver. I found two that match but wasn’t sure of his size so I guessed. I’ve had them for over a week and didn’t know how to give his to him because I thought at our age promise rings were kind of ridiculous and I know that guys sometimes don’t see the sentimental value in things that women do.

Anyway this morning I decided to say fuck it and gave him the ring. I didn’t call it a promise ring, I just told him that I got us a matching set to always be reminded of how much we love each other. It would only fit on his pinky, so that’s where I put it on. He was quiet, stared at it for a few seconds then looked at me with misty eyes and asked quietly “are you giving me a promise ring?”. Before I could even answer he sat up and pulled me into the tightest hug, he kept telling me how much he loved me. We decided to make an official promise to each other to love and grow together until we are in a place where marriage and a family are a viable option. So, nkw these are our official promise rings! At our age I honestly didn’t think it was a thing to do. But it meant the world to him and it shows him that I’m serious about us. I was bummed out that it didn’t fit, we are wearing them on different hands and fingers because they don’t quite fit either one of us properly. He said he’s never going to get rid of it but that if I want something that fits us better that we can wear on matching fingers we can go pick something out together. I can’t wait. I love him so much, I can’t wait for us to be in a place to make everything official. He’s my best friend and the other half of my soul. I am so lucky
