Second hand smoking?

My MIL is a chimney. She smells like cigarettes & sometimes smokes near me. Once I smell the smoke though I hold my breath until I’m completely away from her. How much smoke would have to be inhaled in order to cause harm to the baby?

I feel this way as well. My husband’s family is full of smokers and my husband dips(he’s working on quitting now). I’ve given certain people in his family(SiL, BiL and his best friend) the ultimatum that if they are smoking they will not hold our son. 
But I can’t do the same with his mom and dad which isn’t so bad, since his mom lives almost an hour away and hardly comes down to visit anyway and his dad lives in town but we rarely see him.
My only problem would be having our son stay with my MiL and her boyfriend who smoke in their house, I haven’t brought it up with my husband yet but I plan to soon.

My father In law was the same. We don’t talk anymore but when my first baby came we made them both wear a jacket of ours when they would hold the baby because it was so bad. And we never went to there house. I didn’t feel bad about it because I will do anything to protect my children.

Not sure but now is your time to tell her- use pregnancy as an excuse tell her it makes you nauseas or it’s hard to breath

My mom is a chimney as well and wears an obscene amount of perfume. We see them only a handful of times a year. My dd has asthma (she was hospitalized for an asthma attack for 3 day.) and she isn’t allowed to be around her if she’s just had a cigarette (3rd hand smoke) or has perfume on. She also has to wash her hands after. My mom still doesn’t get it after multiple conversations about it. I would guess if she’s outside and you can get away from it it’s probably not an issue for your baby. Out of experience, I would talk with your husband first and come up with a plan then have your husband  talk to her about your boundaries and expectations before baby comes.
