is vitamin k necessary?

I'm having a boy in March and we are NOT circumcising him, everything will be intact and I don't want any needles in him. I'm giving birth at a midwife run birthing center. She offers the Vitamin K shot and eye ointment but I declined both of those for now. What do you think ladies?

It is not neccessary, babies produce their own vitamin k about 8 days after birth. The shot is 20,000x's the ammount they actually need! Its also filled with many horrible ingredients

My midwife doesn't do ointment or vitamin k. According to her ointment is in case you have chlamydia or gonherrea (can't spell, sorry) and vitamin k is only necessary if baby is going to be bleeding in first week of life.

Go to mamanatural.com. I have her book and her website has all kinds of good information regarding these "treatments". 
As the name suggests its all about having natural as possible options. I think her thoughts are very well educated.

We are also declining. And we will circumcise if it's a boy. I'm just taking alfalfa and chlorella. It's theorized that since circumscision has been moved up to day two and three that excessive bleeding has occurred, however it's been proven that vit K builds and on the eighth day it's at a peak.  I think this is why the medical community has been pushing this so early.

Um yes vitamin K is necessary. Babies will eventually have their own but until that occurs, their blood lacks clotting factors that prevent them from bleeding into their brains. Traversing the birth canal is actually pretty traumatic for the baby and without vitamin K, there is a very real risk of dying of intracranial hemorrhage. The ointment for the eyes is to prevent chlamydia or gonorrhea from causing blindness so those are reasonable to decline if you are not at risk. You should not decline vitamin k. It’s just a vitamin, not an antibiotic or whatever else you may be worried about. It provides protection that your baby might need from literally bleeding into its skull. More importantly, if you’re wondering about what’s actually necessary and what’s not, you should consult evidence-based sources like the American Academy of Pediatrics.
