Should schools have a moment of silence when a student commits suicide?

This past weekend a boy who attended the high school which I am a senior at committed suicide. Word has spread about the school, but I don't believe everyone is aware. In the library there are people there to provide support for the students, to help us cope. Also, some of the teachers took time to have a somber conversation with us about the boy and suicide. However, I feel as though we should have had a moment of silence for him before morning announcements this morning as a way to respect and mourn him. What do you think? Would a moment of silence for the recently passed student have been good, or is it better that we didn't, as to not further upset the students?

We had a girl die by suicide when I was in 6th grade, she was in 8th. We had a moment of silence for her after it happened and again at graduation when her class graduated. They also left a seat open with a gown draped on it and a cap. They called her name as well and spoke kind words about how missed she is and how we’ll never forget her. I was never so proud of my high school as I was that day.

I'd more so encourage ongoing conversation about suicide, abuse, prevention, mental health, giving out resources, and anti-bullying campaigns. Moments of silence are an oddity to me as they don't really do anything.

I think it’s fine to but I don’t think it’s necessary. As long as they acknowledge it in some way, I think that’s appropriate. A boy from my school also passed away from suicide. I don’t think we had a moment of silence but we had a memorial banner that everyone could sign and the guidance office offered time for anyone who needed it. Teachers also expressed that if anyone needed some time to grieve to leave at any moment. They also mentioned him during the graduation for his class.

It would be nice to pay respects to him and have a moment of silence but often times , moments of silence are linked to religious traditions and might not be allowed in some schools .

In high school, two of the kids who went there committed suicide. All we had was rumors and a letter sent to our parents. We did have a moment of silence for a kid who died of brain cancer though.
