Bad idea?

Question

My kids will start out doing chores for stickers (sticker chart), and then when they get older (say 10?), give them $5-10 a week for their chores to teach them about saving and what not. Thoughts?

Chores are a part of life and should be taught to do because one day they will have to do them on their own without pay. So when I was growing up.. we did chores with no pay, and we were paid for good grades in school. We could do jobs for other people for money though.. babysitting, yard work, ect.

No one pays me to do the laundry every week or the dishes so I’m not going to do that with my
Kids. At that point you’re basically treating it like they’re doing you a favor instead of pitching in to the running of a house they live in or helping clean up a mess they participated in making.

I don't understand parents who pay their kids to do what they're supposed to do. No one is over here giving me $10 for making my bed or doing the dishes or cooking dinner. That's how you raise entitled kids who expect a prize every time they do something right. These are basic life skills they need to know. They shouldn't be getting paid for it.

I understand where all of you are coming from. No, no-one pays us as adults to do everyday chores, but we’re talking about little kids here. They’re going to want things when Mom takes them to the shop - should it be candy or just a toy. And I think it’s better to give them money for working for it, rather than get them candy or a toy just because they want it. 
I think giving a small amount of pocket money per week teaches kids to work for their money that pays for what they want. As adults, our we make money via working to earn money for potential things that we want. Can’t exactly tell a 5 year old that they have to get a job if they want that toy, because you are trying to teach them that you don’t get money for doing your chores. Big difference between an adult and a kid doing a chore. Just my opinion.

Ok... I’m just going to apologize now for getting up on my soap box 🤦🏻‍♀️.
Our society is completely financially illiterate! We need to teach our children financial skills & understanding! Allowance is a perfect tool for this. Yes, everyone contributes to the household & chores are part of that with or without an allowance, but as you said it’s about teaching them about money & saving. Kids as young as 5 or 6 can understand simple financial concepts & imo should receive an allowance . Allowance should be age appropriate & should come with age& amount appropriate responsibilities. At 6 that might be a dollar or 2 and they have to use their own money for certain treats. By 12 maybe $5-10 but if they go to the movies or other activity with friends they have to pay. By 16 it might be significantly more, but they are responsible for school clothes & sports/activity fees, etc. There are lots of great resources out there when you do start giving allowance to teach about “spend, save, share” and financial responsibility. I think it's good to show them that hard work pays off, but it's also good to show them that you don't always get something for doing hard work.
I would give them one job that they do for money or stickers like mowing the lawn or cleaning the car. And then having them do the chores for nothing, A fun idea would to give them a monthly paycheck for doing they're job and then giving them one bill they have to pay like a candy bill or something.

I’d say no to the money. Maybe something little when they’re younger. No need to treat them for doing things that are mandatory. That would be like here’s a dollar for showering. If you don’t want to shower then you stink. It you don’t want to do chores your house looks gross. They will learn these things and will be glad you taught them to be clean when they’re older.

My 4 year old has always helped when asked such as picking up her toys, putting the new toilet paper way, cleaning up her dinner mess etc. just recently I gave her the chore of folding and putting away the towels and she absolutely loves it! After she was done with that just yesterday she saw that I was cooking dinner and wanted to help with something so I told her she could sweep the kitchen floor she was a bit bummed but said okay and got to work... I told her we all live here and we all make a mess so we all need to work together and clean up and asked her if that made sense she said yes and went on her marry way. She does not get rewarded for good behavior either... she gets praised but not rewarded... if she does something out of her way or something not asked if her she will sometimes get a quarter and she is over the moon with that
Once she hits 5 we have been talking about her making a “pay check” for odd jobs around the house BUT then she would have to pay rent,gas,electric, water, internet $1 for each. We haven’t decided how much of a paycheck but it definitely won’t be big and what she pays in “bills” would be put into a savings account until she graduated! Something little for her to learn and understand the way of life

Would be feeding them and giving them a roof to live under be enough pay???? That would teach them that you have to work for anything in this world. And it will teach them to appreciate what they have.
