Help, heart break

I need help, I need advice. I had been with my boyfriend for three years and yesterday he said he needed time to think, figure out who he was and experience things on his own. He says he still loves me and wants to be friends but that’s all we can be at the time being until he finds himself. Do I stay? Do I leave? I love him so much I can’t leave him but do I have to? He still kisses my forehead and rubs my back, listens to me and calls me his best friend but what do I do? I’m so confused.
