Would you rather be the wife or the mistress?

I've been watching a lot of documentaries about the 1700's and medieval times. It seems quite often men would cheat on their wives with a mistress. Kings would give them gifts, etc. Would you rather be the wife married to a man like that or would you rather be a mistress?

Neither. I’d rather be with someone who respects me enough not to have a mistress. But if you think about it, it’s probably better to be the mistress in that situation because you aren’t tied to anyone the way the wife is. You aren’t losing as much as she would be.

Neither. But if I had to pick I’d rather be the wife. At least then I’d have had social standing and should the affair come out I wouldn’t be labeled as a hore like most mistresses would have been if found out. Women back then really only had their good name to rely on so I’d rather have that.
