Screening rant

Laura

My triple screen came back 1:24 for downs. I had a fetal assessment and the dates are correct. I refuse to have an amino as I had a MC in June and cannot bear to chance it again. The non-invasive blood test is $500 and not covered (in 🇨🇦) and I have 2 little ones so I can’t really afford to pay for something that still won’t give a concrete answer.

I’m 37 so it could happen. 1 in 24 sounds really bad but it is just 4%, that means 96% chance my baby is fine. WTF!? A negative screen is less than 0.4% for my age alone, I don’t know anything that is considered “positive “ on a 0.5% chance alone.

I went through this at 33 with my first (dates were wrong, longest 3 weeks of my life), skipped the test with my second and was stupid to test with my 3rd. When we try for #4 at 39, I am not doing this stupid test, freaking out a pregnant woman over nothing! Of course I still have my moments of doubt, anxiety, and crying. Wish I never took the stupid “voluntary” test, as I would never abort anyways for religious reasons, so why stress myself over what ifs. I will love my baby no matter what and I will rise for whatever the occasion calls for.
