Are you offended by racist jokes?

I'm Hispanic and I like to believe I'm not a sensitive person, but today while hanging out with my boyfriend and his friends, there was this guy who kept telling racist jokes. Seeing everyone laughing and going along with it made me feel uncomfortable and I couldn't help it but to feel alienated. Part of me felt like it was wrong for me to feel bad about myself because of a joke.

Look, some jokes are out of line. Let's not kid ourselves.
But people joke about literally everything and everyone. People who wear glasses, blondes, tall people, people with braces, short people, etc. etc. etc. There is literally no escaping jokes.

Yes. If it’s someone from the same race as me it’s kind of whatever but some people take shit too far. Confronted my boyfriend before because he thought it was cool to make jokes about my Asian side, he shut the fuck up after that.

Depends who it is. If I know them well and we have that kind of relationship, then sure. If it was my boyfriends friends, I’d feel uneasy unless I was close to them.

It depends. I’m Native and some Native jokes are truly horrible, but others really don’t bother me and are often funny. My husband loves comedy shows and when we go they pick on everything- they’ll ask about people’s jobs, if they have kids, pets, their nationality, appearance, culture etc. When it’s done in a certain setting and as long as the jokes don’t become nasty or derogatory then I think it’s fine. Comedy makes fun of everyday things in general, it doesn’t have to mean anything. I also grew up overseas where we had 62 different nationalities in just my graduating class. People made race/nationality jokes all the time about everyone- it was all in jest too. You wouldn’t cross certain lines, but joking about stereotypes was fairly common. It was all in fun and no one really cared. 
So for me, it depends on the joke and context.

Some stereotype jokes are ok, like "shit white people say" but joking about lynching and slavery or internment, not okay.
 My husband's family doesnt really know how to tell a joke that isnt a lightly racist but they usually stick to jokes on themselves-hispanics/afro caribbean

It is wrong he made a joke that made you feel bad about yourself. But I’m that annoying friend that says “let’s not generalize” when something even vaguely not okay comes out of people’s mouths.

I mean there's a line when you're telling those jokes. Thing is.. if you just met a person, they shouldn't start joking about serious things. I joke very differently depending on the person I'm talking to. After a while of knowing someone you realise what they take or don't take offence to. And honestly tell the person If u feel uncomfortable and they'll probably stop.

Offended isn’t the right word. I’m white af, I don’t experience racism. But I will definitely say something if someone says racist shit, even if they attempt to disguise it as a joke. Doesn’t happen all that often though, because I’m not friends with racists
