Pacifier at 1 week?

Question

Is it safe to give a 1 week old a pacifier? 
Pros and  cons? Suggestions, experiences?
My family has never been big on pacifiers.m, my siblings and I didn’t use them, cousins didn’t use them, my 1 year old never used them. 
My husband side of the family...all of them and all his nieces and nephews used them. And they used them till about 3 years old. They were addicted, they threw tantrums all the time if they didn’t have them. 
Anyways, this is the reason I ask. my SIL came over today and she was holding my 1 week old and she gave her a pacifier. (I had one laying around from a gift I was given, wasn’t been washed!) she’s like well they need it cus they just like to suck. And earlier she even asked me if I had given her a pacifier yet and I said no. 
My baby is one week old and I haven’t had the need to givr her one. She eats and sleeps. I breast feed her, but i don’t get much yet. So I give her formula when needed. 
Am I wrong for being upset that she gave her a pacifier??!?!

It’s your choice to use one or not. But yes it’s totally safe to give a one week old baby a paci. They use them in the NICU on newborns teeny tiny babies it helps soothe them and helps to develop that sucking skill. But totally your call your the mom.

It’s up to you if you want to use it. NICU offered a pacifier the day he was born, but he didn’t like it and still doesn’t.

Use of pacifiers is totally your choice and you should only use them if that’s what you want. I breastfed and gave my son a pacifier when he was two days old. He had no issues sucking or anything.

I would be very upset. Pacifiers are a personal choice. There are plenty of pros and cons for whatever you decide, but it should be up to you and I think your SIL crossed a line.

Pleeeease educate yourself. There's nothing wrong with your baby having a pacifier. In fact, it can help reduce the risk of SIDS because it reminds them to learn how to breathe while sleeping. It's also a great way for them to self-soothe. We gave our daughter a pacifier an hour after she was born and dropped it at 12 months as planned. There's no reason for a 3-year-old to have a pacifier. Those kids still have them because their parents are too lazy to sleep train and take them away at a proper age. Plain and simple. So there's no reason whatsoever for you to be upset with your SIL.

It’s fine to give a pacifier that early. The hospital asked me then gave my son one. He had a great latch so it wasn’t an issue for us. He used it maybe a month when he was fussy then started sucking his thumb then when his bottom teeth came in at three months started sucking his two fingers and still does at 12 months. 
You should make sure you regulate the pacifier if you choose to use it. So only when baby is fussy and won’t calm or to get to sleep. That will help with the issue you talked about with three year olds throwing fits for their pacifier!
I’d also be mad if my SIL did that!

My first child didn’t want pacifier, at 2 months she figured out how to refuse and none since. My son is now 3 months old and occasionally likes pacifier.  It is not wrong how you feel about someone else giving your baby something you choose not to, just you have to tell them directly that you don’t want to give your little one pacifier. But I will say this if someone babysits your LO and baby has hard time soothing, having pacifier can be helpful to person who is watching baby for you. Your call either way is okay

I think it’s totally personal choice. My sister ebf and was my nieces paci, and bottle lol
For me I pump and supplement formal and my son took a paci day one. It 100% your choice and preferences.

Honestly it is up to you. It is your kid and your SIL shouldn’t be making that decision for you. We didn’t give our daughter a paci until 3 weeks old but that was because I was tired of being used as a paci. But that was our decision once good breast feeding habits were established. My daughter takes a bottle too, idk if that makes a difference in your choice. Some people say that a paci can confuse them but it helps my daughter soothe herself when she is super upset and needs a chill pill.
