Dating someone with a child

I recently started casually dating a wonderful guy. He is 27 and I am about to turn 25. He told me early on that he has a 7 year old son from a previous relationship. (Him and the mother have a good relationship and she is happily remarried so there is no issue there).

I truly like him and we seem to have something good going on but I want to make sure I respect him and the fact that he has a son. I feel like the fact that he has a child makes things a lot more serious in a quicker amount of time than would happen in another relationship. I feel like if I continue dating him then I am committing to one day becoming a step mom lol.

Does anyone have any advice on dating someone with a child? How did you go about it carefully?
