Question

I was told recently that the copper IUD isn’t recommended as much because it didn’t have hormones so it wasn’t as effective..... is this true???? I can’t take hormones because of my depression & anxiety.... but I’m also very young & don’t want kids.....

The copper the IUD is made of kills the sperm if he ejaculates inside you. I don’t think it would be an option if it wasn’t effective. I’ve had mine for almost six years and have not gotten pregnant

Yes it is a little bit less effective than the hormonal. The copper failure rate is 0.8% and hormonal failure rate is 0.2%. so the difference is tiny

I have the paragard. Have have had it for about 6 months. It’s been great. I will say tho. I did have some pain the beginning. Like from my stomach, back and down my legs. My periods are super heavy also which is new for me since I didn’t have a regular period to begin with due to PCOS. Like super heavy. Other then that tho. I have had no other issues.

I have had mine for about a year and I love it. He cums in me all the time and I'm not pregnant so I'd say it's good. My son is 14 months so it's the best option for us cons6my body rejects all other artificial hormones.

It is just as effective but does come with its own potential side effects, as does every birth control. For me I can only have it for 3 to 4 years insted of the intened 5 years, by 3/4 years I get extremely intese cramps that I have passed out from pain and had extreme pain with sex.
Personally I love the copper iud, as its non hormonal. I'm on my second one and in between I had mirena in for 6 months and it came with MANY side effects for me. I prefer the copper as I struggle with anxiety, ADHD and depression. 
Just remember to weigh your own pros and cons and everyone is going to react differently.

They said it was just as effective, sometimes more, as you don't have to worry about how your body handles the hormones when I got mine. I too cannot get the hormonal ones with my bipolar disorder medication. It's a great option in my opinion!

The IUD is very localized. It isn’t like the implant or shot or pill or patch, etc. I struggle with depression as well, I even had PPD, and the mirena has not effected my moods at all. It’s the first birth control method that hasn’t.

The copper is 99.4% effective at best which is about the same as mini pills and female sterilization which are at 99.5% effective when used correctly. The hormonal iuds are 99.9% effective. I have used the mini pill for 2 years without condoms or pull out and never got pregnant. There is a bit more of a risk of getting pregnant because it has a lower effectiveness rate.

I have the copper one, never heard of it being less effective. It’s mainly recommended for people who gave birth already cause it’s larger. I’ve had it for 3 years and haven’t gotten pregnant yet (don’t use condoms, been in only committed long term relationships) so 🤷‍♀️ seems to work 😂
