When to introduce pacifier?

I know that lactation consultants don’t recommend pacifiers at first but when is it considered safe to introduce them to your baby? I have been sticking my finger in my baby’s mouth to soothe him when he is fussy/falling asleep and I feel like it’s not any different than using a pacifier. I have to use a nipple shield to breastfeed since he has a poor latch and weak suck and I don’t want to cause any setbacks on nursing. He’s 3 weeks old tomorrow.

I gave my baby a pacifier maybe a little before 3 weeks.  She was premature and struggled to latch on at first so I decided to bottle feed but she still goes for my breast so I put her on in between feeds and she doesn’t have a problem (considering she has a pacifier AND a bottle).  She knows the difference, if I try to give her a pacifier when she wants nipple she just spits it out.

I comfort nursed and then my son started sucking his fingers (or thumb at bedtime). He refuses a pacifier completely, if I put one in his mouth he rips it out and glares at me. Kinda funny to be honest. I read its best to avoid until you have fully established nursing/feeding.

My little took one the day he was born. He is 4 months and still breastfeeding strong! My pediatrician also said it’s becoming more known that nipple confusion is not really a problem. Good luck!
