Starving my son?

Question

I’ve been breastfeeding my son for 4 months. For the past few days he would nurse for a couple minutes and fussy at the breast. Today Decided to pump and I got just 1oz. Have I been starving my son? Should I buy formula? I drink lots of water, blue powerade, oatmeal, lactation cookies. 
If I give him formula im afraid i will produce less

I am never able to pump much (1 or 2 oz at a time) but my daughter is a giant chub and poops all the time. Don't just go by what you can pump! Is your baby gaining weight? Having lots of wet and some dirty diapers? Babies nurse for lots of reasons: hunger, comfort, tired.... if you're worried, go straight to your pediatrician. None of us are doctors and none of us know you and your baby personally. Babies can be scary and confusing, but dont worry - you'll get through this 😊

Pumping is not an indication of how much your baby is eating. If your baby is gaining weight and having 5-6+ wet diapers a day, they are getting well hydrated. I honestly wouldn’t supplement just based on one pumping session. Some women can never make enough between feeds to pump out a bottle and that’s fine because your body is making exactly what baby eats. You can work to increase your supply if you’re really worried though. Try pumping about 30min after baby eats for 10 minutes. Sometimes you may not get any milk at all. 
Also be sure you’re comfortable with the pump settings. It shouldn’t feel uncomfortable, that would mean your suction is too high. Some settings won’t allow milk to flow and then some will. It’s all about what works for you.

If you think he’s not getting enough then yes get some formula to help. You don’t want him hungry. But only you can be the judge of that.

Also wanted to ask, is he congested at all? My daughter did this for a couple days this past week and was a little congested. He may be going through a growth spurt. Personally, i wouldnt supplement just quite yet if he is having enough wet diapers and seems content at the end of a feed. Watch his fists. They will be clinched at the start of a feed, then should relax towards the end as he gets full. If it were me, I would give it a couple days to regulate as long as he is hydrated.

Go to lactation consultant and they can weigh your baby to see how much he takes a feeding. Then you'll know for sure if you need to supplement!!

I had to supplement because of weigbt loss, get LO one to eat off you first, as long as he will, then give him a oz pf formula after each feeding, Then pump to get production up, Thos sounds kinda rigorous and it is a pain but ot does work, i did this in two hour intervals and it was kinda constant. just a side note, if hes not having weight problems then honestly your supply might be fine, babys  draw almost twice the amount of milk than a pump, also if your like me, your breasts actually have to get use to a pump and it seems like your not making enough because it doesnt trigger your letdown like a child is. the first time I pumped I got like 1 oz and thought something was wrong,

Pump in addition to him eating. I found drinking 100oz of water a day minimum helped but you also can't go off of what you pump vs what he eats. Try giving and oz or two of formula to supplement but also pump

This happened to me and I went to a lactation consultant and they weighed my baby before and after a feeding and turns out she was getting plenty of milk! So that was very reassuring for me and may be a great option and resource for you to check out as well! :)

Similac to simplement is a good choice if you want to give when not breastfeeding or if you want to SO to help. Remember to pump or feed every 2-3 hrs and every time you decide to give your baby formula instead of the breast pump. Also drinking your liquids warm helps aswell as taking hot showers and massaging those boobs
