How is your relationship with your in-laws?

I have been happily married with my husband for 7 years and I love him to death. But his family, specially his mother dose not liked me. I feel like she hates the fact that I took his child away. So instead of working it out we just don’t have a relationship at all. They also pictured a different wife for his son, they wanted the stay home mom. I am not, I have a full time job, we don’t have kids and I am very independent. So everything that I do it’s a problem for them. They talk about me to him saying how I am not what they hoped. Thankfully my husband doesn’t care what they say and we have a very good relationship but it dose make it awkward when we go visit or in family gathering. I have try communicating with her but it seems like every time I try she gathers more negative things to say about me. It’s this common or would it get better?!
