Liam Neeson situation, what should happen to him?

This is a current news story over here right now. Screenshots below. 
***Trigger warning - mentions rape and murder. ***

He said he sought help from a Catholic Priest to turn his life around and stop these thoughts from occuring, and denies being a racist. 
Poll question: what punishment (if any) do you feel is necessary for something like this?

I don’t think he’s deserving of any punishment. I think people put their own spin on it. Had the person who attacked his loved one been any other race I’m quite sure he would have felt the same way. 
I’m also damn near positive anyone who has ever been through such a situation has felt that seeming uncontrollable rage, or wanting revenge. The fact the guy happened to be black is just semantics tbh

He is expressing remorse and admitting to his problems for which he sought help. He has a better outlook now. He was trying to avenge his friend and the only thing he had to go on was that the attacker was black. I feel he was blinded by his rage.

This is actually one of the situations where I believe there is proof that he is telling the truth. It is much more common for victims and friends/family of victims to hate or wish that people who had a similar characteristic with the person who attacked them to just “disappear” because it’s hard for them to be reminded of that person every time they see someone with the same characteristic. I was assaulted by a redhead and for a while I truly hated all redheads. I didn’t hate the people with the red hair, I just literally hated redheads— if they dyed their hair brown or black I’d be able to totally go back to normal with them. I fantasized about killing a man with red hair once and I recognized that it was irrational and sought out help for it but I get this a bit. 
I do think it’s weird that he asked her about the man’s race— most people volunteer the info, so him asking for it and then subsequently seeking out that person puts a bad taste in my mouth. However, I have a feeling that if her answer was a white man, he’d still go out and try to harm a white guy, so I think his overall question was rooted in anger issues and a need for vengeance— to take away something from someone who took something away from her, and the easiest way for him to do that was to find a person that had a major sharing characteristic with the rapist. I personally will give him a pass on punishment for this as he did seem to learn from this quickly and did not pursue it any further, so there isn’t much to punish anyway, and I personally understand parts of these feelings and have seen them happen often In victims, but this is a very slippery slope and I’d still have to let him know that his response was very inappropriate.

We all say things when we are at that level of anger. And it was 40 years ago. I think he explains himself quite well, and people should just move on. 
A couple of years ago a lady was involved in a smash and grab here and went on a rampage about black people immediately afterwards (trauma, shock, panic). It's scary being a victim of crime. She unfortunately got sentenced to jail for that, which caused quite the upset here by people of all races.

He did nothing wrong. Legally, he did nothing. He didn’t hurt anyone. He wanted to, but he didn’t. Does it make his thought process at the time correct? No, absolutely not, but he apologised and learnt from it, which is more than can be said for some people. Anyone who thinks he should lose his entire career is an idiot.

If anything I think he’s being transparent and honest as he can. He didn’t have to talk about this, he didn’t have to bring it to light and yet he did because he knew it was wrong. I clearly remember when I found out my sister was raped, everytime I saw a white man with long brown hair I questioned and wanted to beat the shit out of them because of how she was hurt and violated. I had so much anger and hate inside. 
Want to talk about a hate crime, let’s discuss Mark Walburg and how he actually committed a hate crime and beat the shit of an Asian man while saying racial slurs and things at the poor man....yet he’s a huge ass star and just everyone loves him, yet he’s a proven racist🙄

He doesn’t deserve punishment for literally not doing anything. He thought about it but chose not to do it. Also he lived in a different time period back then where racism was much more apparent than it is now & he acknowledges that he was wrong & has learned from it. People shouldn’t be vilified for coming clean.

I don’t think any punishment is necessary. I think it’s normal, when a loved one is attacked so senselessly and brutally, to be angry and want revenge. He didn’t act on it. It’s also primal instinct for (most) men to want to protect women. Had he acted on it, that would be a whole different story.
