First Fertility Doctor Visit

Hi ladies, I went to a fertility clinic and wanted to share this first experience.

First of all, do you recommend any clinics/reproductive endocrinologist doctors in NYC?

I went to the NY Fertility Center in the Flatiron District and had a very bad experience.

First, the doctor was almost two hours late for my appointment. When he finally came, he was rushed but still answer all my questions. I told him I was tracking my cycle using Glow and Flo and he said “oh so you’re crazy”. First red flag. He proceeded to look at my past lab results and thyroid levels (I had my thyroid removed a few years ago) and he said “you’re not a normal 30 year old, you’re never going to be normal, you should do

IVF and get it over with - do you have insurance? Does your insurance cover fertility treatment?”. I asked him what other options we had, since I’m ok with

IVF, but only if we have tried other ways and none of them work. He insisted that the IVF was our best option.

He then asked why my husband was not there with me (he was at work) but I said that we could call my husband. I called DH and the doctor spoke to him asking a few questions about what was my sex drive like, if I was “dry down there”, and my overall mood. He also said several numbers that didn’t make sense about our chances to get pregnant. Not to mention that he said to my husband several times “your wife is going crazy”.

The doctor was very arrogant and sounded like a sales person trying aggressively to sell his most expensive treatment package. No bedside manners. He kept talking about my ethnicity and made a “joke” saying that if I got treatment through IVF at their clinic that I should not worry that my baby would not be asian. He made me feel completely insecure about my chances of getting pregnant. None of my doctors (endocrinologist and obgyn expressed these concerns).

Both my husband and I are well-educated people and we do a lot of research. We obviously wouldn’t know as much as a doctor, but the doctor’s bedside manners were bad and he had no regards for my feelings.

I’m searching for other doctors and hope to find someone I feel safe with and respected. Definitely the sales pitch is a turn off for us.

Thanks for reading ladies, hope you can share your experiences.
