What would you do?

My four-year-old son keeps calling me fat! And tells me I need to lose weight.  I'm 5 5 and only 160 lb

I'd probably eliminate the source of where he is learning to talk to me like that, then teach him some respect with whatever mode of discipline works best for your family..

Your four year old should have no concept of “needing to lose weight” and is learning that somewhere. Maybe in the moments you don’t know she/he is listening to the way you to talk yourself? Children say what they see, so if you’ve got a belly and your kid says it, so what. It’s there. But when a child says “you need to lose weight”, something more is going on.

Find out where your child is learning to talk like this. That may even include yourself. So watch how you talk about your body around your child too because they pick up on what you say and just repeat it back to you.

I would tell him to not call people that and explain it hurts peoples feelings. If he continued to do so, he would lose a toy.

My daughter keeps asking me if I have a baby in my belly again..... She's 9 years old and has Down Syndrome. It's hard to explain to her that I've just gained some weight. I do however tell her it's not nice to say that kind of stuff to people.

Hmmm I’d be getting to the bottom of this for sure... finding out where that body image idea is coming from ... but one thing I DO know... the bigger a deal you make it, the bigger it will be in a 4 year olds mine. When my daughter said that to me, right around the same age I simply said, “I’m not fat honey, I’m fluffy!” She laughed and never called anyone fat again including me 🙂

Well, he has to be hearing that from somewhere and THATS where the problem is, he’s four so he’s not just going to come up with that. So the root of the problem needs to be dealt with. And as far as your son,  personally I would use this to teach him fat isn’t a bad thing, that you are beautiful and feel beautiful and that commenting on someone else’s appearance can be very hurtful. But that’s just my parenting style

Little kids say what’s on their mind. They tell the truth. It’s how they are. You just need to guide them on what’s appropriate and not appropriate to say to others.
