How long did you wait to get an epidural?

FTM and I’m wanting to do a natural birth but terrified of transition. Has anyone gone natural until then or can’t you really tell when you’re close? What’s the longest you’ve waited to get an epidural?

I was 7cm when I got mine. I wanted to go natural but due to severely swollen kidneys I was given the option of a c-section or epidural.
Go in with little expectations so you won't be let down. Do what you have to do!

I was 7cm, so close to 8cm and they gave it to me last minute. I regret it tho. I had to wait longer for it to wear off and it was horrible. I couldn’t walk or do anything by myself. I was constantly calling nurses and having my husband help me. It was nerve-wracking. This time, i either get it early or not at all 🤷🏻‍♀️

With my first I was 7cm when I got to the hospital (I wanted to labor at home as long as possible and be more comfortable), and got it at 8cm. With my second I got it at 7cm. I tried going natural both times...

My water broke and I ended up getting induced because I was only 1cm, I went for about 12 hours of induction without epidural, I would not recommend! I wasn’t really progressing so the doctors turned up the pitocin after the epidural, this helped me go from 4-9 in a few hours. I would suggest getting the epidural when the pain is too much to bear. I tried to wait as long as possible and ultimately the pain was too much for me and it exhausted me so that I was totally overwhelmed. I ended up with an emergency c section bc the baby was in distress, but my biggest take away is that there is no need to be a hero about the pain.

I told my nurses I wanted one and they recommended when it was time. I don’t remember what my contractions were or anything.  I know they say once you ask for it, it can take up to an hour before you actually get one so don’t wait too long.

I got one when dilated to a 6. I was told I’d have to be between a 4 and 7 to get one. After 7 it’s too late. They check you continuously to see how you’re dilating. If you all of a sudden said you wanted one they’d check you and let you know if you can have one. Just keep in mind from the get go that if you wait too long it’ll be off the table.
