Sperm donor help from the hospital?

Hi ladies, so last October me and partner found out he wasn’t able to have his own biological children. So now we’re going down the sperm donor route with the hospital but I wanted to know the in and the outs going through this treatment. What happens? How long the process can take? And is it expensive?

We are in Australia so I’m not sure if this will apply to you. My husband is azoospermic so we needed to use a donor. We went through all of the hoops with our fertility place; here it’s counseling, info, etc etc which you need to do to legally access donor sperm.
Then we got access to the ‘donor database’ we can select from. Depending on which sperm bank you select from the cost can be $500 - $1,200. We eventually ended up going with a known donor for a variety of reasons, and then all we pay is the storage fee, which is a few hundred dollars a year.
Factors which helped us make our decision to use known over anonymous:
1. Profile. My husband’s mixed race and we wanted a donor with the same racial profile. We couldn’t find a single donor that came even remotely close.
2. The numbers. Different sperm banks have different allowances for how many ‘users’ can access a particular donor’s sperm. If it’s 10 users, who all end up with 3 kids each, that’s 30 half brothers and sisters out there in the world related to our children. 
3. Access. A known donor allows you to, subject to the agreement you have with them, have sperm on tap. As long as they’re willing, you’ll have what you need.
4. Relationship. Our anonymous donor is my husband’s half brother. He is unmarried, over 40 with no children (or desire for any marriage or children), doesn’t live in the same state as us and was more than happy to help us. It will also mean that our children are still ‘related’ to their father, which was important to my husband at the end of the day.
There is no right or wrong option, but these are the factors that at the end of the day drove our decision. It took about a year to finally make the decision and we ran every option to ground to make sure we were absolutely on board with what we did.

I’m sorry to hear about partners condition. Almost everything fertility wise is expensive but if you are only purchasing sperm and not doing IVF, it can be really affordable depending on the sperm donor you choose. I’ve heard really good things about the cyro California bank. I would check out their website and see what they have to offer.
