Research shows retention is almost never a great idea since it is not super effective. If your child is behind they should offer school-based interventions at school that he/she may qualify for depending on how big the gap is and what their rate of progress is. to catch up.

I’m a school social worker, and being held back can significantly impact them emotionally. If they’re significantly struggling academically it may be a good idea to consider what supports they offer to help them and continue them with their expected grade progression.

I think that is a conversation that the parents and the teacher do need to have. Maybe the parents need to put more time in to help catch the student up with their peers. Maybe holding the child back truely is the best option. But not knowing the situation or the child, i can't give great input.

Either that or tutor the kid or get them a tutor and if grades improve then I wouldn’t want my kid to be held back.
