Wedding planning suggestions?

My fiancé and I are planning our wedding and trying to save as much money as possible. I’m already going to have my sister who’s a baker make our cake. I’m thinking of making our own decorations..I’m not sure if that would look tacky though. I’m open to any help or suggestions! Has anybody made their own decorations or cake?

First set a budget.
Then work out what you want, if can afford it, can you find it cheaper? If not is there an affordable alternative?
I made my own decorations.
Jam and pasta jars decorated with Hessian, lace and pearls and put a candle in them.
I made my own bunting out of old bed sheets. And hung them with cheap fairy lights.
And I made mine my 6 bridesmaids bouquets 13 button holes and 2 thank you arrangements form supermarket flowers for £100.
I had wanted a hog roast but couldn't afford it so we had a big BBQ instead.
After much searching i found a bar company that would come for free if I had a certain number of guests.
My top tip when getting quotes is say I'm having a party how much would X,y,z cost. As soon as you mention wedding people like to charge more.

We had our wedding on a Friday (because it's what they had available) and it was cheaper than a Saturday. We also booked it about 4 or 5 months out from our wedding date (which we were flexible on) so they were already like half off cause the owner was just trying to fill up the rest of his spots. It was a beautiful venue for under $1000 that we didn't decorate for since it was already beautiful (just center pieces). We also had to take pics there since it was on a Friday evening so we didn't need to pay for studio time elsewhere. 
I had a friend make our invites using an a pic from our engagement shoot and we got them printed at stapes on card stock. 
Anything we needed for our guestbook or center pieces I bought at Michaels with 50% off coupons. 
We did buffet style (with head table being served) as it was cheaper and no one complained about it since they got to eat as much as they wanted (buffet is typically cheaper since they do t need to pay servers)

Torally agree with Adi, vistaprint was a great deal! There's another printing company in Toronto that's great depending on where you're located. We made our own garland for the head table and the rest of our flowers - we saved a lot of money doing that snd they turned out great! YouTube was a big help haha. If you have a Michael's craft store or something similar near you get on their mailing list. We bought everything with 50% off coupons! Good luck! Just invest in a good photographer 😊

Decorations and flowers were an area I did not want to spend a lot of money on. Bridesmaids bouquets are stupidly expensive and most of the time are forgotten about once the pictures are done so I went with 3 long stemmed flowers wrapped in ribbon instead. Intricate centerpieces are also a waste IMO. They usually get pushed to the side especially when the food is served. I’m not super crafty but my friend is so she helped me make raised cake plates with pieces found from resale and antique shops. Instead of wedding cake I did cupcakes so each table’s centerpiece was the cake plate with cupcakes on it and that took care of dessert and the centerpiece in one shot (another table was in the room with more cupcakes and donuts....I’m not a fan of wedding cake or that whole cutting the cake thing so that worked for us) 
TBH you need to realistically look at your ability to DIY it....is the cost and time you spend to make stuff going to outweigh the ease of purchasing something already ready? Is it going to look like a Pinterest fail or child’s art project?

Also, the amount of decorations and type are going to vary depending on your venue. Are you talking about a VFW Hall? A hotel ball room? A private room at a restaurant? A sunset cruise? A park or backyard?
