how do you know your baby is ready for solids?

I’m very interested in baby led weaning and my son is about to be 5 months old. I’m not gonna start until he’s 6 months for sure but I want to start looking for signs that baby is ready for weaning (specifically baby led weaning)

When they start actively trying to get at your food or are very interested in what you’re eating

My son was clearly wanting my food. If I ate with him near me he would eye my food the entire time and even open his mouth and reach out like he wanted it.

We didn’t do BLW but by 4 months when we started baby food our son was able to sit up with a little support, he would reach for our food, and was very interested in what we were doing when eating. He also didn’t seem to say full enough anymore on formula alone. It’s best to make sure they don’t have the tongue thrust reflex anymore and that they will pull food in not push it out. When we tried food for the first time with our son at 4 months it was like he already knew how to eat from a spoon. Obviously with BLW you’re really not supposed to start that until at least 6 months so I’d just say by then make sure all those other things I mentioned are kind of checked off and then you’re probably good to go. Obviously you’ll want to start with some softer foods to make sure that your LO is grasping the concept of eating real well because sometimes some kids just aren’t ready until later. Also make sure you know he difference between choking and gagging. There will be time for LO will gag a bit and then move on and continue eating. It’s expected they are trying new consistency’s. But you always want to make sure you know the signs of choking just Incase.
