When to start baby food

My baby is 5 months today (2.5 months adjusted). Would it be okay for him to try baby food like this one in the picture? This one is for 4 months and above. He currently eats 180ml (6 oz).

I wouldn’t do that without talking to your pediatrician. For most babies they recommend waiting until six months to start foods. But for many things, premature babies need to use their adjusted age. There are some potential long term consequences to starting foods too soon. These include: obesity, eczema, allergies, diabetes, gastrointestinal issues, and more.  Considering your baby is only 2.5 months adjusted, I definitely wouldn’t do this without a doctors approval.

I wouldn't. Updated recommendations say not to start until six months and many pediatricians (especially in America) have not even updated. There are many potential consequences to starting food too early and no benefits at all. I waited until six months with my first, despite his pediatrician okaying it at four months. My youngest turns six months tomorrow and we haven't started yet. My kids were both born a week early, so I wait until a week after they turn six months.

No. A child that is born full term isn't supposed to be weaned until 6 month. If I had a preemie I'd wait even longer. 2,5 month is definitely waaay to early to start weaning. And your babies digestive system will most likely be as far developed as his corrected date.

We never did any of this pureed crap 🙅🏻 it does nothing for their growth and development. We started solids at 6 months as recommended by both the AAP and the WHO and our daughter has always eaten what we eat.

If he seems ready, try it. You will be able to tell if he's not ready if he keeps thrusting his tongue out to push the food out or if he gags.

If he seems interested in what your eating and opens his mouth if you stick a spoon to it then he is ready. Both my kids were ready by 4 months. Especially my second one lol he loves food always did. Breastfeeding they recommend waiting till 6 months cause you get good nourishment from the breast milk. But at 4 months if baby is interested in food and ready it is fine. Just monitor what you give and always wait a week before switching to check for allergies. Peaches with my second one went in fine and came out flaming 😊
