Speech Delay or Normal? 14 month old...

Hi all,

I'm having some concerns in regards to my 14 month old's speech development. I plan on asking the pediatrician at his 15 month appointment but would appreciate other mom's experiences.

My LO will only say 'car' (he loves cars) on a regular basis. Before car, he would say dada ALL the time like he does now with car but now since car started dada is used only very occasionally. He sometimes babbled mamama but doesn't say Mama directly. He also has only mimicked animal sounds (moo for cow) once or twice and that's all. He says "MMM" when he is eating something he loves but I don't consider that a word. Sometimes he will mimic a word like "banana" but won't say it on his own.

He always tries to show me stuff by pointing and grunting (sometimes his grunts sound like he is saying "dat" but not always) and I will name it for him and he will be satisfied.

He is able to point to a lot of things correctly if I ask, "where is the cat?" "Which one is the pig". He follows directions like, "go and get your shoes" or "put the cup on the table".

I've been doing baby signs with him and he knows how to sign more, all done, and milk.

My other concern I have is that when he gets mad or frustrated he will bite his hand, he has never done it hard enough to leave a mark, but it's just alarming. I try not to give extra attention to that behaviour and just redirect him.

Am I jumping the gun or am I valid on my concerns? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
