Should i have?

So my boyfriend is in the army so he’s not really in the loop with things that go on with family sometimes. Well something serious happened to his sister today and I had known that something was going on with sister but I didn’t know what exactly happened but I only knew for a little bit. Well I was talking to my boyfriend and he told me his day all of a sudden got bad and I asked if it was because of what happened to his sister but he didn’t know what happened either. Well he got mad and said that if his dad didn’t tell him he wouldn’t of known, and that it was sad that I knew before him. So he’s mad at me for not telling him as soon as I seem something. I do feel bad for not saying anything but I didn’t know 100% what happened and I felt like it wasn’t my place to say anything. Am I in the wrong?

I don’t it has anything to do with you. He’s just concerned about his family and upset about the situation.

His anger needs to he directed at his family not you. I say this because they should have told him first and not you. It they should have asked you to tell him. Yes you could have told him, but you didn't know if his parents already did. It's different for me and my husband, generally I am the first to hear everything and inform my husband. There have been very few times where his parents asked to be the ones to tell him. 
Explain to him that what needs to happen is a discussion about how things should be handled moving forward. And then he needs to make sure his family is aware of that. That way they don't come after you because you told him.

Well; if you didn’t know whether he had been informed or not then when he said his day got real bad... you should have simply asked him why and just listened.
Saying “is it bc of your sister?” is sort of a “DERP” on your part, hon. Especially if your argument is going to be that it’s not your place to tell.
But I understand your predicament and all-in-all, nothing you can do and I’m sure he’ll get over it. His family was probably looking for the right time to share that with him especially if it’s sensitive in nature.
