Did I do the right thing or should I of just kept my mouth shut

So about a week ago I was at the my local gas station pumping gas. While waiting for the gas to pump a man looking like he is in his 30s came up to me, he looked very well dressed he pointed to his truck he was driving a really nice newer truck (nicer than mine) his wife was sitting in the truck she looked well dressed as well. He told me they are on there way home from the zoo while there someone broke the back window of his truck and stole his backpack. The backpack had all his money,credit cards , cell phones everything in it. They are trying to get home but ran out of gas and don’t have any money on them since all there money and credit cards were stolen. I felt bad and thought how much it would suck if I was in that situation so I decided to give him $10.

So today I’m at the same gas station getting gas and I see the same truck same man there. He walks over to me ( I’m thinking maybe he is going to thank me or something). But no instead he start talking and tells me the same damn story about him and his wife are on there was home from the zoo and someone broke into his truck stole his backpack, he ran out of gas and needs gas money to get home. Blah blah So of course I tell him I gave you gas money last week when someone broke in to your truck, he goes “oh” and walks away obviously knowing I know he is a scammer.

So I go in the store to buy a few snacks and when I come out he is next to the front door telling some other guy his fake story of his backpack being stolen and needing gas money to get home. I was just going to walk by but I decided to stop and tell the guy “don’t give him your money he is lying he comes out here every week telling that same story about needing gas money, if you want to give someone money give it to someone who truly needs it not this guy driving nice new truck scamming people”

And then I walked to my car and drove away. Do you think I should of did that or should I of just kept my mouth shut?
