Wake up a sleeping baby to change diaper?

I’m babysitting my cousins 9 month old son, I put him down for a nap about an hour ago and I just went in to check on him and the smell of the room tells me his diaper is dirty with something funky inside 🤮😂 do I wake him up to change his diaper? I’m 31 weeks pregnant but don’t have any kids of my own yet so I’m not sure what to do. I don’t wanna ruin his nap because he’s feisty and he’ll have a hard time going back down, but I don’t want him to sit in his dirty diaper and get a diaper rash.

Thank you for everyone’s advice! 
I did wake him up only to find he hadn’t pooped. The smell was coming from a poopy diaper his mom had changed earlier and forgot to throw away so it was stinking up the room😂 but he was in a good mood when he woke up and didn’t seem tired as he had napped for about an hour and a half.

I wouldn’t wake him for it. If it bothers him he would wake up himself. Just do it as soon as he gets up.

Try to gently check & confirm there is poop in there first. At that age, both my daughters could fill a room full with farts so rank you'd swear her diaper must've exploded but it'll be bone dry. Last thing you want to do is wake a sleeping baby for a dry fart diaper. Lol.

Not having your own kids isn't an excuse for lacking common sense... if he needs his diaper changed, you change him. Pretty basic and straightforward.
