Was told I'm racist

I was working the customer service counter. It was first thing in the morning so only 2 customers in the store and just me and 1 cashier. A lady came to the counter, the wrong register space, and asked for a few money orders. I let her stand in the wrong space since she had her purse and some items out of it.. I just figured I'd ring it up at the right register and walk the money to and from so she didn't have to pack her stuff and move around the counter.

After I finished making the money orders a man walked to the correct register.. to speed things up for him I said "check out?" He said "yeah" and I directed him to the open register (where there was no one in line) so he didn't have to wait for me to finish up with the lady. Honestly, I couldn't have been more nice to him. He grabbed his things and huffed and went to the lady at the register. He was out of the store before I finished with the lady.

After my customer left the cashier came over and told me he said I was racist because I helped a white lady and not him.

I've never been so hurt by words. I would like to think I treat all people fair and to be called something I find absolutely disgusting is just sad. I can understand he may not have known I was already helping someone and was just trying to help him but for him to judge me THAT fast..

I'm worried I will see him again and I dont want to feel backlash from him. We have the option, where I work, that if someone is not friendly with you or you dont feel right with them you can request another cashier over but I would feel that would make matters worse. I'm hoping if/when he comes in again he wont hold anything against me. I have seen him a few times (small town) but never interacted with him.

If he were to come in.. should I tell him what happened or just keep my distance from him? Should I tell my boss what happened? Idk what to do 😕
