When did your toddler start using the potty

My baby will be 3 in July and he just won’t use the potty. He knows what it is, he has 2 different potty types. But when he needs to poop he runs around the corner and hides and won’t go to the potty. I try and catch him mid act and put him on the potty and he just holds it. When it comes to peeing I just can’t even try to figure out how to do that one. He’s so smart he knows all his colors, shapes and he talks practically like a grown up he just does not want to potty. Any advice for me? This is our first kid and I don’t have anyone to ask. Thank you!

My son did that. It’s normal. They’re used to squatting. It’s a much more natural way to go to the bathroom. They’re more comfortable just going in their diaper too.  He started to finally use the potty for bowel movements the month he turned three. You can’t really force it. It’s a mental thing. Just keep encouraging and using some type of reward system if that works for you. Don’t worry- he won’t still be wearing a diaper in kindergarten. He will get it. Stay consistent. Every child has their own pace.

About a month before my son turned 3 last summer, I had been trying to get him to use the potty for a good 6 months before then but nothing, and I mean nothing I did worked. He is very smart and independent but the even the slightest suggestion by me for him to use the bathroom almost turned him away from it worse. We bought underwear he loved, he had a little potty and we tried just having him go without a diaper but he just always had an accident within minutes of him going without a diaper. I thought he’d never go to the bathroom lol and I gave up even suggesting it. But one day he woke up and ASKED to use the bathroom. When he was done he asked for underwear and I appeased without getting my hopes up. From that day on he has been using the bathroom and has only had accidents in unforeseen incidents (we were in the car too long, fell asleep without going pee, we were out and couldn’t find a bathroom soon enough). I used a diaper at night and noticed about 6 months in he was waking up dry to I stopped that too and it’s been fine. Anyways my advice here is, give him time. He won’t be in diapers forever, but sometimes pushing it really does more harm than good. Keep positive when taking about the potty to him and figure out what works for you guys!! Good luck! 💕

As a two year old teacher who has to potty train every kid before they move out of the classroom to go to the 3 year old classroom... the smart kids are the hardest. 
When your kids not ready yet (your stage): 
Put them on the potty every hour . Some kids like different things: potty watches, stickers... I DO NOT RECOMMEND CANDY . If you sit him
Down (teach him to sit down every-time first, no need to add aiming to the mix) each hour for 10 mins he may go, he may not . But eventually you will catch him peeing or pooping . When he does, give him a sticker and act like it was the best thing he ever does ! Don’t give him rewards for just sitting down. He has to learn what the goal is . 
When he does show signs he’s ready: 
The thing that works for me and the three other  two year old teachers (private daycare, we each have a classroom of ten) is that when they do show signs that they are ready you throw all
The diapers away . All of them. Cold turkey , you only put a pull-up on them while they sleep. Bunker down, prep your washing mashing and get ready for a long 2-3 weeks . But if they were truly ready it shouldn’t take more than 2-3 weeks .

My son is half potty training. A month before his third birthday we just put underwear on and put him on the potty every hour. If he had an accident we drew a sad face on our whiteboard and if he peed in the potty we drew a happy face. We did it for three days and he got it on the first day. He still had accidents those three days but he was finally peeing in the potty! He even stays dry during naps and at night! But he still won’t poop anywhere but in his pull-ups or underwear. I should note he’s also a very smart kid and was very stubborn about not going to the potty. Drawing sad/happy faces on the whiteboard is what did the trick for him cuz he loves when I draw pictures on there for him. Still trying to figure out the pooping situation.

I know this post is a couple weeks old but I just wanted to say that my nephew is the same way. Well, with the poop part anyway. He would hold it or go on himself and I want to say just within the past 6 months to a year did my sister finally start getting him to go to the potty to poop, and he just turned 7.
