Is it ok to tell your kid this?

So I'm an adult now but my dad has always told me to "shut the f*** up". Is that appropriate to say to your child ever?

That’s so rude! What a dick! It’s one thing to cuss without thinking about it on accident in front of your kids or a child, but to use it to hurt them verbally is childish and wrong. I mean I’m sure you ended up okay, but it’s still messed up and inappropriate.

I've heard my dad cuss maybe twice in my 35 years. And he has never told me to shut up even without cussing.

I don't think it's acceptable in any circumstances. Whether your 5, 15, or 25. A parent should never talk to their kid that way.

My dad said it a lot to me. He is also mentally, emotionally, and physically abusive. He still tries to this day and my husband always gets involved to make him back down. I try really hard to break the cycle of abuse towards my kids but I'm so freaking exhausted some days I snap a little when they purposely push my buttons and then feel like crap later and apologize.

Curse you less in my house didn’t mean anything. “Shut the fuck up” was the same as “shut up”. It never upset me so idk.
