Social media and kids?

Just a question on other Mumma’s views, not for arguments sake etc... just interested. I only have Facebook and Snapchat and I don’t have anyone on Snapchat other than family and friends... for my little girl I NEVER want her to have social media until she’s like 18 and makes her own choices, from my personal experience it’s ground me down seeing ‘perfect’ women and twisted my view on guys, it poses threats to her and I’ve seen it alter people close to me and how they act and just personally I don’t like it and I’m not a fan of my child ever having it, is anyone different or the same? How extreme has/will anyone be on banning it? As I think I’m gonna be quite psychotic checking her phone when she’s older every night and she won’t have it past a certain time either... I’ve seen so many people pose for Instagram etc and then suicide and no one guesses it? I feel like if you’re not strong headed enough it can really screw you up and so personally I will go quite far to protect her from it...

Unfortunately all you can do is teach your kids right from wrong and try to instill positive values in them. You can try telling them no soc media but at the end of the day they will just create a secret one and you won’t know about it if that’s what they chose to do. Personally we have no soc media

Well, first off being strong-headed has nothing to do with suicidal thoughts. You can be super strict but then your child will just have secret accounts you won’t even know about. Someone in my mom’s group tried to ban it and then found out her daughter was just using her friend’s phone when she was at school or out together to access her own accounts. Better to build an open and trusting relationship than to be super strict and have your child sneak behind your back.

I feel like once she is 16-17 she knows what’s right and wrong. All you can do is teach her what to watch out for etc. Because chances are, if you’re very strict on her about social media and her phone while all of her friends have all types of social media, she will want it to. And the vast majority of the time it leads to them doing it behind your back and that’s not the type of relationship you want with your daughter.

I have 2 teenagers. One is 12 doesnt even have a phone or any tablet etc. And the other is almost 16 and has aa phone but doesn't haveany social media accts like facebook IG Snapchat. She is completely happy with not having them. You said you have a lil girl so i assume you have awhile until you have to worry about that stuff. But i think if you continue to teach her the rights and wrongs of all that then your chances of having issues declines. All we can hope is what we show and teach them helps them make the best decisions through out life.
