Could you stay in a relationship with someone your parent (specifically mother) stated they strongly dislike?

My mom told me she doesn’t like my boyfriend because she saw him touch my butt (I’m turning 20 years old, btw). I was wondering if I should keep seeing him even though she’s given me an ultimatum (she’s very controlling and tends to be emotionally abusive), or if I should just appease her and end things with him.

I mean if it was for legitimate reasons I would take my moms opinion into consideration.. but because he touched your ass? Seriously? If my mom ever gave me an ultimatum because of that I would happily cut her off, especially since you said she was emotionally abusive. It sounds like no matter who you’re with she will probably try to find a reason to not like them.

In your case I don't think I'd be listening to her. Him touchig your ass is a stupid reason not to like someone. Also considering you said she's controlling and emotionally abusive I'd defibitely be ignoring her.

My mother was emotionally abusive. I cut contact with her last year. She would like then hate my boyfriends to pressure me to breakup so she could regain control of me. Get out on your own and do what makes you happy! Hardest thing is getting over the guilt instinct from abusive parents.

Appeasing her will only lead to worse. TRUST ME. I thought the same way, give her this one thing to calm the storm. But it always comes back, and unexpectedly. If you give them the chance abusive people like her will destroy your life and mind.

If it’s a legitimate reason sure I respect my moms opinion. If something serious she sees or feels I would definitely take it into consideration. If it’s something small like what you said then I would just explain to my boyfriend there’s boundaries and both of you need to respect where you are and who you’re with! For example if you’re at his parents place youre not going to be making out with each other. There’s just some things you don’t do. BUT it’s not a reason to end things because your mom doesn’t like it. If your mom has always been controlling then I wouldn’t worry about it. Just talk to your boyfriend so you both know what’s ok and what’s not ok. Controlling people will ALWAYS be that way. The next person you date could say hi wrong and she’ll want you to break up with him. If you like him and he’s accepting of boundaries then dont let her get in the way!

I think it really depends on your relationship with your mother.... and your mothers personality. Some mons are crazy and just want to be in control but there are some moms out there (like mine) that really only care about your well being and see past what you think “love is”. That was my situation at least. I stayed with a guy ( my now husband) and my mom was SOO right now we have a kid together and I feel stuck sometimes. I do love him but I wish I had listened to my mom. Hindsight is 20/20 95% of the time...

Depends of the reasons. Being a mom doesn't make you right about everything. Are there legitimate reasons or is it because of something like different ethnicities/races, economic class, looks...?
