Please help

So my boyfriend and I share a car. It is under his name but I use it more for work, school, and taking our kids to daycare/preschool. Anyways, I've been giving him money the last few months for the car payment. Apparently he hasn't been making the payments because the car was repossessed today. I am angry and sad. My kids are on spring break as am I from work but I am stressed. Does anyone have any experience on getting a car back after it was repossessed? They say we owe a little under $1400. We have $800 right now and will have to borrow the rest. My bf said we should be able to get it back but if not, we would have to find a small used car to purchase. If we don't get our car back, I will have to quit my job and take the kids out of school. I know it sounds like I am exaggerating but I work part time for a school and I will be done in the beginning of june. No one is around to help with rides. Any advice on getting the car back? (I live in California if that makes a difference)
