Properly Storing Breastmilk
We EBF and I have yet to touch my breast pump... instead, I have been starting a stash using Milkies Milk Saver (which is awesome!)
At first I would pour the saved milk (up to 2 oz per feeding) into the Medela 6 oz container, and then transfer it to a milk bag for freezing once I accumulated 6 oz. Now since it takes a little longer to accumulate than when my milk first came in, I collect up to 2 oz and then transfer to freezer bag.
I didn’t get to do a lot of research on breastfeeding and storing milk, other than looking up how long milk would last at room temperature, in the fridge, and in the freezer. I was very overwhelmed, as I found out I was pregnant late in my second trimester and mainly just prepared for childbirth.
After childbirth, while learning to breastfeed, I was overwhelmed at the amount I would leak and my overabundant supply once my milk came in. My midwife recommended the milk saver and it was awesome to not feel like I was wasting milk, but now that we are more settled, I want to ensure I am storing correctly, especially once I start pumping.
So what I do now is feed with the saver, then pour the collected milk from the saver in a Medela 6 oz bottle and put thst in the fridge. Every feed, I continue pouring into that container until it reaches 2 oz. then I transfer the milk into a freezer bag and freeze. Sometimes I cans collect the 2 oz in one feed, sometimes in 2, and sometimes it takes nearly all day. So, I guess I’m worried about when it’s taking longer to build up to the 2 oz when I transfer to the freezer... is the milk losing it’s nutrition by sitting in the Medela bottle in the fridge?
I am researching as well but I wondered what tips and suggestions y’all had? All comments are welcome, please be kind, and of course I will do my own research I just wanted to get some feedback first.
