Do you think my hair would look good with blonde highlights? I’ve never dyed my hair before.

So as in the title, I’ve never dyed my hair before and I kind of want to give my hair more color. I don’t hate my hair color, but it sometimes looks gray. And that could be due to it being so dry and dead. I’m getting my hair cut to shoulder length and I’d like to get it colored as well. Any advice for someone new to hair coloring? I don’t want anything extreme. Just maybe some lightness added to it? Would they have to bleach it?
