Condom broke

Hey y'all. I'm pretty new to condoms and sex. I was using a condom for the third time ever with my boyfriend a couple days ago. I had gone shopping for them a while back, so I just bought a regular size cuz I didn't know what size he is (some background info: the sexual health education at school was so bad, I didn't know what a condom looked like or how it really worked; in fact I had to look up what it was a couple years ago since I came across the term and didn't know what it was lol). I basically just grabbed a random one and called it a day.

So we were having period sex using it and it broke. I know I'm not pregnant, but I'm wondering if I need to get a bigger size. When I bought them and opened the little box up to see what the little wrappers actually looked like, I thought they looked like his size, but when I brought the condoms out and saw his dick, the condoms looked too small widthwise (I always forget how big his dick is, since I assumed they were usually the size of a tampon, at least until i saw his). Nevertheless, he got it on just fine although it looked really tight on him. The first two times we used it, it was fine. However, the third time, it broke. I'm not sure if it was because we may have been going a little rougher this time or if it's too small. I asked my friend if I should get a bigger size, but she said no, that they're supposed to be tight. I'm kinda skeptical about it, but I want more opinions on it. If I need to get a bigger size what if it's too big? Is a condom breaking normal for rough sex? Please help.
