Discouraged and frustrated

Had my 38 week appointment today. It was the first time the doctor was supposed to check my cervix. She had a go at it but it hurt like hell! She couldn't quite get there (because I was so uncomfortable). I know they have to check so I'll have to get over the pain. I'm just so discouraged because I want to be able to get this simple thing done without any issue! The doctor recommended some meditation and breathing techniques to help so I'll give that a go.

Is there anyone else out there that has a lot of pain during cervical checks/vaginal exams? If so, how do you cope?
