Does long distance work?

My boyfriend recently put in an application for a college that is about 1&1/2 to 2 hours away (same state). Of course, he has to wait for his acceptance and to see if loans/grants will cover it so it’s not set in stone but i honestly just can’t help but to think about what would happen to us. Our 2 year anniversary is in August. I know we are at a time in our lives where we are trying to figure out what we want to do; but i personally think that me and him could make it work.. it just scares me if it were to come to breaking up just because he’s farther away from me.
