Is this rude?

My mom and I were sitting across from two people on a bus in a small area together. The two people were speaking a different language and it sounded interesting, we wanted to know what it was. When we got off we asked them what language they were speaking and they told us. Is it rude to ask someone what language they are speaking?

No but I feel like it depends on how you asked.

It depends on how you ask, and how you react when/if they tell you. Acknowledge that they don't ~have~ to tell you, you're asking because you're curious but it's not really any of your business. And then be polite when they tell you, or if they decline to tell you.

It's kind of sad that you feel you have to ask this question. Why would it be rude? It's seems like nowadays people think everything is rude/offensive. Soon enough people will just stop speak with each other, for fear of being offensive.

Depends on, I mean if you always get asked where are you from what languages are you speaking it's starting to get annoyed as a non white person, from my experience
