How to sleep train an 8 month old baby?

My 8 month old son is still waking up 2 to 3 times a night and won't go back to sleep unless I give him milk. How do I sleep train my baby so he will sleep through the night and also not be dependent on night time feedings?

My 1 year old still wakes up 2-3 times per night. He only drinks water now, but nevertheless still wakes up. Personally I don't believe in sleep training in the sense of "cry it out" and my pediatrician also advised against it. So I'm just hanging in there and being patient. I know that eventually he'll grow out of it, just like he grew out of other behaviours.

When he woke up at night, we would wait 10 minutes to see if he could calm himself down. Originally I would go straight to him and then he expected me to come every time he cried. 
I liked this approach bc sleep is developmental. If he didn’t go back to sleep within 30 minutes, he was not ready to sleep thru the night. Even though I let him cry and figure out how to self soothe, he still woke up at 4am every night. That lasted about 2 months when he finally stopped waking up at all.

A light cry it out method will probably do the trick. That’s what we did with our son at 11 months because we took his pacifier and then he had a hard time sleeping without that comfort. Took us 3 days and he was sleeping through the night again and able to fall asleep on his own.

I think my daughter was around 9 months when I let her just cry it out one night. I turned the volume off on the monitor. Woke up the next morning she was sound asleep and slept through the night ever since then.
