I’m 21 never had one, never used one 🤷‍♀️ idk the concept of a 16 yr old using one weirds me out, but then again it’s safer than real sex so if you gotta do something, I’d support and recommend that. 
Parents might be tricky, and tbh I probs just wouldn’t have told mine. But if you choose to or they find out, present it to them that way. It’s natural teenage and adult feelings, and this is safer than having sex and getting stds or becoming pregnant or dealing with trash guys
