relationship problems

so last night i went out with one of my friends and forgot to tell my boyfriend, as it was a last minute decision. I woke up this morning and everything was fine until he figured out i went out. He freaked out saying that he’s my boyfriend and that he should know where i am and that if i’m going to keep going out without him that he thinks we need to break up. I see where he’s coming from but then again I feel like it’s a little too much. I would never ever cheat on him. What do i do ?
