Should I buy some formula even if I plan to breastfeed?

Question

Am about to give birth and I plan to breastfeed. Am packing my hospital bag and wonder if I should buy some milk for the journey home and the first days in case breast milk doesn't come in?

One last question. Does colostrum always come in? Am 38 weeks and I have never leaked anything. My breasts did not change in size but my nipples are protruding.

You have colostrum and colostrum is what your baby will eat until your milk comes in. Babies stomachs are so tiny that's why they eat little but often. Milk normally comes in 3/5 days after giving birth. Feed on demand. Colostrum is the best thing a baby can have.

No, there should be no need. If there is a problem the hospital should have donor milk or formula. Also if it's needed to give anything extra, have them syringe- or cup feed baby.

If you are absolutely set on breastfeeding, do not give baby formula yet. The best way to bring your milk in and increase your supply when needed is to let the baby nurse. At the beginning the baby’s stomach is so incredibly small that the little bit of colostrum is plenty. Your milk will take a few days to come in (although some women have it come quicker and some longer). Also, research cluster feeding!!! It can save you from stressing out thinking the baby isn’t getting enough and is constantly hungry. Our bodies and babies are amazing and know what to do.

I wouldnt for the hospital. But I’m very glad i got some for when we got home. I planned on EBF. But the process was horrendous for me. I’m glad i got some just Incase because i did in fact need it.

I would just plan on breastfeeding. My milk room about 3 to 4 days to come in but baby was happy with colostrum. We did have formula at home but that was because my mother in law gave us a bunch that she was given. We didn't have to use it until 4 months. With this pregnancy, I don't plan on buying any unless we need it. Good luck mama! Breastfeeding has its challenges, but it's worth it.

I agree with every one else. Also, if you really need formula the hospital will give you enough for a day or two at home. This will give you enough time to buy some if you really need it.

I had a couple of free samples that had been included in those gift boxes when you register for baby stuff. I was glad to have a few bottles’ worth just in case. It took 5 days for my milk to come in and we did try giving him a tiny bit of formula in the middle of the night when I was exhausted and worried but we got some donor milk the next day and I’ve been breastfeeding for a year now.

I had planned on EBF, but a friend had given us a small can of similac and I’m really glad we had it. Baby came out with a tongue tie, and I have flat nipples so she couldn’t (and still can’t) latch. You can’t predict what your breastfeeding experience will be like unfortunately. Just remember that fed is best!
