Is Breastfeeding A Natural Contraceptive???

I’ve heard that breastfeeding is a natural birth control contraceptive?? Is this true?? Who all has gotten pregnant while breastfeeding and who all hasn’t???

Breastfeeding hormones can delay the start of your cycle which is why some people believe it’s a contraceptive. However, it’s possible to still ovulate without the presence of your period. I know several mamas who have gotten pregnant while nursing. My midwife and family doctor and son’s pediatrician all informed us as well about the possibility of becoming pregnant while nursing.

I can keep you from ovulating for a while, but you never know how long. I didn't ovulate for 12 months with my first and 15 months with my second because of breastfeeding. Some breastfeeding women have their period and ovulation return much sooner. Breastfeeding is not a reliable contraceptive.

The LAM method is very effective in the first 6 months but I would still be careful. I was breastfeeding around the clock, 3-4 times a night and bedsharing and still got my damn period at 8 months pp. I got pregnant 9 months pp.

It’s not foolproof. I’ve been nursing for two years so I haven’t gotten my period back yet. So it’s less likely that I would get pregnant right now. However - you ovulate before you have a period so you could definitely still get pregnant while Bf - even if you haven’t gotten a period back yet.

I've heard that as well. If it was though I think you'd also have to do careful tracking of your cycle and be exclusively breastfeeding. So it would only work for about 6 months...before baby has solids. A lot of ladies don't get periods while ebf.

That is not a natural contraceptive especially if your cycle returns while breastfeeding I am still breastfeeding my 14 month old and I am 6 weeks pregnant I was pregnant before this but lost the baby in March

I got my period back 3 months pp with my first, then got pregnant 7 months pp (not an accident). So they are 16 months apart in age and then I got my period back after 6 weeks! Both breastfed exclusively
