Mixed son hair. Help

My son is mixed with black and white. He doesnt have tight curls and we keep it fairly short. But it always feel so dry. Hes 3 and I already put conditioner in it and leave in conditioner and it still feels so dry. I tried oil but that was way to oil. Is there like an in between. The father has nothing to do with him so I cant ask for help or advice from him. My husband now is Philipien and Mexican so he has a totally different hair texture as well.
