Here’s the story.

Your father in law loses his job of 30 years suddenly. You then find out it’s because he’s been stealing from the company for his entire employment. The total theft amounts to $2M. The company says he can either pay back the $2M or he can go to court and face jail among the risk of having to pay back the stolen funds. The only way your in laws can pay back the debt is for them to sell everything they have but they are both in their mid 60’s and cannot work much at all anymore due to health issues.
