Was I wrong? Issue with cats and partner...

My S.O and I recently purchased a new couch. We have two young kittens (3 months & 5 months) that like to climb on things and chase each other around. I am not particularly fond of cats but my partner wanted them. Today, I was cleaning around the apartment when I noticed the youngest cat clawing at our couch. I immediately started shouting at him to stop and scruffed it. My partner at the time was at his computer (literally right next to the couch) and heard/saw everything. He got really upset with me and said to never do that again to the kittens. He then told me we would break up and he’d leave me if I ever gave the cats away. I will admit that I should not have shouted at the kitten (I think that was just me panicking at seeing it tear the new couch up) but I don’t think me scruffing it was such a bad thing... I’ve never had cats before but once we decided to get kittens I started reading up on them as much as I could and learned that even their mother scruffs them. Am I wrong for what I did? Was he right in reprimanding me? What should I do next time if I see the kittens doing this?
